Symantec and E-Mail
When attempting to send e-mail on a computer running Symantec Antivirus, an error message similar to the following is generated, "Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support secure connections."
To correct this problem, follow these steps:
- Launch Symantec Antivirus.
- Click the + sign next to Configure to expand it, and then select Internet E-mail Auto-Protect.
- Uncheck the Internet E-Mail Auto-Protect feature to disable it.

Note: If are using Norton AntiVirus, disable Outgoing Email Scanning. To disable Outgoing Email Scanning refer to Norton's online help. The location of this feature varies with different versions of the software.
Note: The commercial version of Norton Antivirus or Symantec Antivirus Corporate 9.x (both Windows products) attempt to scan outgoing e-mails via a proxy on outgoing connections. The process fails because the scan interferes with SSL encryption.
The scan outgoing e-mail feature is not available and therefore not a problem when running Symantec Corporate 8.x. Symantec Corporate 9.x does offer the feature, however, when using our installers on the Carnegie Mellon Web Portal the option is switched off by default.
