Step 3: Enable Screen Saver Password
To prevent someone from using your computer when you have stepped away, you should enable a screen saver password.
Note: Locking the screen does not prevent other users from turning off the computer and restarting it, then logging in to their own account. Save your work before you leave your computer.
- From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
- In the System Preferences window, click Security.
- Click the lock icon
to make changes.
- If prompted, enter the admin userid and password.
- In the Security window, follow the steps for your operating system, Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard):
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
- Select Require a password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver.
Note: This option ONLY applies to the current account. Login to each account and turn on this option.
- In addition to the screen saver password, you should secure your system by selecting:
- Disable automatic login.
- Require password to unlock each secure system preference.
- Use secure virtual memory.

- Click the lock icon to prevent further changes.
- Close the Security window and restart your machine.
Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
- Select General tab and check Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver.
Note: This option ONLY applies to the current account. Login to each account and turn on this option.
- In addition to the screen saver password, you should secure your system by selecting:
- Disable automatic login.
- Require password to unlock each System Preference.
- Use secure virtual memory.

- Click the lock icon to prevent further changes.
- Close the Security window and restart your machine.
