Printing Tips
Follow these tips when using the printing system:
- Make sure you poke the touchscreen to wake up the kiosk.
- Not sure where you’ll be on campus? Print to the Andrew Central queue and pick your 8.5X11 B&W print job at any Cluster or Library location.
- The cl-uc queue has an extended 12 hour expiration time. The Andrew Central queue has a 4 hour expiration. Although jobs printed to Andrew Central can be released at the UC print kiosk, they will expire after 4 hours.
- When printing large jobs, please use a multi printer site. These sites include Baker Hall 140, Hunt Reference Area, E&S Library, Wean 5200. These sites load balance between multiple printers.
- When releasing jobs at multiprinter sites, watch the bottom right corner of the release station screen to see which printer your job will be printed to.
- Cluster computers and library computers default to the local queue rather than Andrew Central queue to ensure highest driver compatability. You can select the Andrew Central queue from the drop down box to if you would like to release your job at any black & white kiosk.
- Your quota is deducted once you push the "Print" button on the kiosk so think twice - are you sure this is the version of this document that you want to print? Once it is sent from the kiosk to the printer there is no way to cancel the job and there are no refunds so be sure you really want this print job before you press Print.
- High brightness coated paper is available for the color laser printer in CFA between 9 and 5 weekdays.
Print Quota Management
- You can check your printing quota by adding the Dining/Campus Xpress portlet on my.andrew.cmu. (Check under the Life Tab.)
- Print multiple pages on one page or print duplex. Your quota is only charged per piece of paper.
- PowerPoint has an option to print 6 slides per page. When printed double sided this means you could print 12 slides and only eat up 5 cents of quota.
- Some Adobe applications allow you to print several pages on one side of a piece of paper. This feature could allow you to put four pages on a single piece of paper when printing double sided.
- Cluster Macs and Windows machines print duplex by default. You can print duplex from your personal machine, too.
- Windows Duplex Printing: In the print dialog box, click on “properties” and select “Flip on Long Edge” under “Print on both sides”.
- Mac Duplex Printing: In the print dialog box, click on “copies & pages” and select the “layout” drop down. Select “long edge binding”.
- Always do page preview when printing web pages. Make sure your browser doesn’t add a mostly blank page at the end that you will be charged for.
- When printing from Photoshop or PageMaker, always choose ASCII Postscript encoding rather than the default Binary to ensure you don’t get reams of garbage output.
- If you are manual feeding in CFA, ask the CCon for help. CCons can help make sure your document gets printed on the correct paper.
- Quota gets reset on the first day of classes.
- If you run out of quota in the middle of a print job, the printing system will charge your Campus Xpress account for the remaining pages printed where applicable.
