FAQ Printing

For information related to this topic refer to:

How can I check my print usage?
You can check your print usage and quota by viewing the PlaidCa$h portlet under the Life tab in the Carnegie Mellon Web portal (http://my.cmu.edu/).

Why should I have to pay for printing?
Printing has a real cost associated with it, and we are doing our best to contain that cost. We have documented a tendency towards wasteful printing among certain users.

Also, we want to add additional features to the printing system (like color and dorm printing). We can't do that without some accounting system. We estimate that the $40 quota will satisfy 95% of the campus community’s printing. Just don’t spend all your money on printing color the first week of classes.

How much will printing cost?
Please refer to the published price list.

Don't I get any 'free' printing at all?
You get $40 of ‘free’ printing a semester. Use it however you’d like.

What about refunds or carry-overs?
No. This is not a business. Our goal is to contain the real costs of printing, and to encourage users to be conservative in their printing habits. No refunds, no credits, no discounts, no carry-overs, no trading or combining. Printing quota is reset at the beginning of each semester. If you don't use your quota each year, you've done your bit to help save trees and money.

Are there any exceptions to the quotas?
You can request that your department add additional funds to your printing quota. Have your department email kiosk-printing@andrew.cmu.edu for more information.

Can I print at the library?
Yes! The University Libraries printing is now on our system. You can print to the specific library queues or use the Andrew Central queue to release your print job at library locations.

Are there any printers in residence halls?
We have an Andrew Printer in the Donner House common room. You can print there using the Andrew Central queue, or print specifically to the Donner Queue.

How do I set up my home or office computer to use the Andrew Printing system?
Follow the instructions included in the Andrew Printing documentation.
