Sharing Files with Windows Users

To share files or folders with a Windows computer, you must turn on Windows File Sharing.

Turn On Windows File Sharing

  1. Select Apple menu > System Preferences...
  2. Click Sharing in the Internet & Network section.
  3. In the Sharing window, if necessary, click the lock icon and autheticate using the administrator userid and password.
  4. Follow the steps for your operating system, Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard):
  • Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

  1. Select the checkbox next to Windows File Sharing.
  2. Click Enable Accounts.

  3. Next, select an account to use and click Done.
    IMPORTANT: Do not select an administrator account.  Also, make sure the account you are using has a strong password.<empty>
  4. Click the lock icon to prevent further changes and quit System Preferences.
  • Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

  1. Select the checkbox next to File Sharing and click Options.

  2. Check Share files and folders using SMB.
  3. Next, select an account to use and click Done.
    IMPORTANT: Do not select an administrator account.  Also, make sure the account you are using has a strong password.

  4. Click the lock icon to prevent further changes and quit System Preferences.
