File Sharing on a Mac

File Sharing allows you to copy or use files stored on another computer.  Other users can also copy files to your Drop Box, when file sharing is enabled.

When using file sharing, consider the following:

  • Avoid making folder shares writable.  By default, shares are read only.
  • Secure each user account with a strong password. This is the number one source of compromise on a Macintosh computer.

Apple File Sharing

To share files with another Macintosh on your local network or on the Internet, file sharing must be enabled on your computer.  Users can connect using your computer's IP address.  For more information on setting up file sharing, see Sharing Files with Other Mac Users.

Windows File Sharing

To share your files with Windows users, Windows Sharing must be turned on.  Windows users will also need the network address of your computer, a username and password.  For more information, see Sharing Files with Windows Users.
