Adding the LDAP Directory Service
Follow these steps to configure Thunderbird to access the campus directory for email addresses:
- Depending on your operating system, do one of the following:
- Windows: select Tools > Options
- Mac: select Thunderbird > Preferences
- The Options dialog box appears. Select Composition and then select the Addressing tab.
- Select the checkbox for Directory Server and then select Edit Directories...

- The LDAP Directory Servers dialog box appears. Click Add.
- The Directory Server Properties dialog box appears.Complete the fields as follows:
- Name: CMU Person Search
- Hostname: ldap.andrew.cmu.edu
- Base DN: ou=person,dc=cmu,dc=edu
- Port number: 389

- Select the Advanced tab and complete the fields as follows:
- Scope: select the radio button for One Level.
- Search filter: (cmuActiveDN=*)

- Click OK to close the open dialog boxes.
Searching or Completing Addresses
Once you have configured Thunderbird to access the campus LDAP Directory Service or have added contacts to your address book, Thunderbird will automatically complete addresses as you type in the TO, CC and BCC fields.
To set up automatic addressing:
- Choose Tools > Account Settings and click Composition & Addressing.
- Under Addressing, select Use a different LDAP server.
- From the drop-down menu, choose CMU Person Search.
- Click OK.
