Configuring Cyrus and the SMTP Server

Complete the following steps to configure Apple Mail to send and receive e-mail and work with SMTP Authentication:

  1. Launch Apple Mail.
  2. The New Account window appears. Click Continue to skip the Welcome to Mail screen.
  3. Complete the following General Information fields:
    • Account Type: Choose IMAP from the drop-down menu
    • Account Description: CMU Cyrus Mail
    • Full Name: Type your name as you'd like others to see it
    • Email Address: Type the e-mail address you want others to see

  4. Click Continue.
  5. For Incoming Mail Server complete the following fields:
    • Incoming Mail Server: cyrus.andrew.cmu.edu
    • User Name: Type your Andrew ID and then a "+" in lower-case letters (e.g., juser+)
    • Password: Do not enter a password here



  6. Click Continue.
    Note: If the Incoming Mail Security window appears, select Use Secure Layer (SSL) and choose Password from the Authentication drop-down menu. Click Continue.
  7. For Outgoing Mail Server, complete the following fields:
    • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.andrew.cmu.edu
    • Select (check) Use Authentication
    • User Name: Type your Andrew ID in lower-case letters (do not include @andrew.cmu.edu)
    • Password: Do not enter a password here



  8. Click Continue.
    Note: If the Outgoing Mail Security window appears, select (check) Use Secure Layer (SSL)and choose Password from the Authentication drop-down menu. Click Continue.
  9. The Account Summary window appears. Verify the information and then click Continue.
  10. Click Done. Mail may hang while it locates your folders and bulletin boards.

IMPORTANT: Verify your server settings. Check the following account settings:

  1. Select Mail > Preferences and click Accounts.
  2. Click Account Information and then Server Settings....



  3. In the Server Settings window, verify:
    • Server port: 587
      Note: If port 587 fails to work, use 465.
    • Select (check) Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    • Authentication: Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)
    • User Name: Enter your userID
    • Password: leave blank



    • Click OK.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Verify the Port and Authentication settings:
    • Port: 993
    • Select (check) Use SSL
    • Authentication: Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)

  6. Close the Accounts window and Save your changes.
