10.2 Open Questions
Here are the open issues that need to be decided for our 10.2 deployment in the summer of 2003. The list is probably not complete yet but it covers some of the major concerns.
Licensing Mac OS X
- We still don't have a broad license for all students and staff
- Does it make sense to get one?
Crypted passwd security
- I suspect we can solve this using new 10.2 shadow password feature.
- RESOLUTION: This was not solved under 10.2 but is now fixed under 10.3.
Update tools for 10.2
- Quota Checker Tool
- CMU Telnet
- Disk Erase
- Mortis
- RESOLUTION:All tools were successfully updated for 10.2.
Printing
- Automate printer creation based on Andrew printer database or printcap file?
- Make sure Duplex printing is enabled by default
- RESOLUTION:Scripts were created that processed an Andrew printcap and executed the proper CUPS setup commands
- RESOLUTION:Duplex was enabled as the default
Login Process
- Implement user.permits feature to restrict who can log in
- Based on LDAP attribute to keep out alumni who have e-mail only accounts
- Do this in the loginhook
- RESOLUTION:No means was provided to do this in 10.2, and this problem has been left unsolved.
Documentation on MyAFS and Preferences
- Provide guidance to users on storing work done in the clusters?
- Advertise MyAFS as a safe and convenient Zip disk replacement
- Give Help Center docs on how to reset preferences for solving problems with apps
