Each Carnegie Mellon student, faculty and staff members is assigned MyFiles storage space. Because the MyFiles storage space is actually a remote server and not a folder on the cluster machine where you are working, any cluster computer can access your MyFiles space. You can also access MyFiles through Virtual Andrew.
When your MyFiles usage reaches 75%, 90%, 95% and 100% email notifications will be sent to you. As you reach or meet your limit, severe issues may occur (e.g., application erros, crashes, slow performance, erros during logout, corrupted profiles, etc). For these reasons it is important to manage your quota.
Note: Previous version snapshots (see below) are NOT counted against your quota.
There are two ways to view your MyFiles quota:
- To view your quota from the Carnegie Mellon Web portal, see Your Andrew Quota.
- To view your quota from a cluster Windows computer, select the Start menu, then Computer and then the Network location (\\andrew.ad.cmu.edu).
Saving to MyFiles
On a Windows cluster computer, the Documents folder represents your personal storage space on the MyFiles server; see example below. To store a file in your MyFiles space, simply navigate to the Documents folder and save the file.
Locate Your Files/Folders
Files or folders saved to the Documents folder are accessible from any Windows cluster computer. To locate the item, select Start > Computer and then click Documents.
Access Previous MyFiles Versions
MyFiles is backed up twice each day which allows you to view, copy or restore a file from a previous version should you need it. The maximum number of versions is based on a number of factors: percentage of disk space that is allocated for backups, frequency of backup, the total amount of storage on disk and the amount of changes to the files, etc.
IMPORTANT: When you restore a previous version of a file or folder, any changes made since the time of that backup are lost. We strongly recommend that you use the "Copy" feature to make another copy of the file to an alternate location. The restore feature will overwrite the existing copy of the file or folder.
Copy Previous File Versions
Follow these steps to view or copy previous versions of your files:
- Log on to any cluster Windows computer with your Andrew userID and password.
- From the Start menu select Computer.
- Locate the Network location userID\\andrew.ad.cmu.edu\users...
- Double click this drive to open it.
Your "MyFiles" folders are listed (i.e., Desktop, My Documents, etc.).
- Locate the file or folder you want to restore.
- Right-click the item and select Properties.
- Within the Properties window, select the Previous Versions tab. Files or directories and the dates that they have been backed up are listed.
- Select the file or folder that you need and click Copy.
- The Copy Items dialog box appears. Rename the file and save it to your Desktop or My Documents folder.
Restore Previous File Versions
To perform a restore of a file, follow these steps:
- From the Previous Versions tab, select the file or folder that you want to restore and click Restore.
- A warning message appears. Click Yes to continue with the restore, but remember, the restore feature will OVERWRITE the existing copy of the file or folder!
- When the previous version of your file is restored a success dialog box will appear. Click OK.
