Home Directory

The Mac cluster desktop includes a Home directory icon that is labeled with your Andrew ID. The Home directory offers shortcuts to a number of files and folders including your Andrew File System (AFS) and MyFiles spaces. 

Using Your AFS Directory

Files saved to your AFS space are accessible from ANY Windows or Mac cluster computer or from ANY computer with Internet access and an FTP utility (e.g., Fetch).

To save a file to your AFS directory, follow these steps:

1. Log on to a Mac cluster machine.
2. Double-click on your Home icon.
   
3. The contents of your AFS directory is displayed.
   
4. Save files to your AFS directory in the same manner you would any Mac directory.

Accessing Your MyFiles (DFS) Space

Each Carnegie Mellon student, faculty and staff member is assigned MyFiles storage space. Because the MyFiles storage space is actually a remote server and not a folder on the cluster machine where you are working, any cluster computer can access your MyFiles space.

Note: Some MyFiles functions, such as restoring files, are only available through Windows cluster computers. For more information, visit MyFiles for Windows.

To save a file to your MyFiles directory, follow these steps:

1. Log on to a Mac cluster machine.
2. Double-click on a MyFiles (DFS) shortcut icon from your Sandbox folder (Note: Though your MyFiles space can be accesesed through the Sandbox, files saved in your MyFiles space will not automatically delete when you log off.)
   
3. The contents of your MyFiles space is displayed.
4. Save files to your MyFiles space in the same manner you would any Mac directory.
