Additional File Storage

Additional file storage or project volumes, are available to provide storage in the Andrew File System distinct from a user's private disk space.  Project volumes must be requested. Following are two cases when obtaining a project volume would be useful:

  • When there are a large number of files associated with a project and not enough room in the user's personal account.
  • When other people need access to the project files and the user doesn't want to use his/her personal account.

Computing Services creates project volumes in specific directories depending on how they will be used.

  • course:  /afs/andrew/course/tree
  • organization: /afs/andrew/org/tree
  • other: /afs/andrew/yourdeptname/

Project volumes normally expire one year from the date of creation. When your project volume nears its expiration date, you and the sponsor will be contacted via e-mail. At that time you may either allow the volume to expire or you may request an extension for another year.

For more information about space allocation and your private disk space, see the help document Your Andrew Unix Account. This document contains information about how to check your quota and how much quota you are allocated as a single user.

For more information, see Publishing Personal, Course or Organizational web pages.

Faculty please note: If you are assigning a project that requires a group of students to request project volumes, please forward a description of the assignment to advisor@andrew.cmu.edu in advance. It is helpful for the Help Center staff to be prepared before receiving a large number of requests.
