How Wireless Works

The Lucent WaveLAN product includes both access points, which are called WavePOINT units, and network adapters, which are called WaveLAN units. The WavePOINT is a radio based station which is mounted in a fixed position and is connected to a wired local network. The WavePOINT unit contains a transmitter, receiver, antenna, and a bridge that routes packets to and from the wired network.

The WaveLAN unit includes a transmitter, receiver, antenna, and the hardware that provides the data interface to the mobile computer. The WaveLan unit is available in PCMCIA and is installed in a mobile computer and gives the computer access to the WavePOINT unit.
