Steven K. Huth
Steven K. Huth is the Vice Provost for Computing Services and Chief Information Officer for Carnegie Mellon University. He previously served as Chief Information Officer for the university's campus in Doha, Qatar, where he worked with the Computing Services Senior Management Team, the Dean’s Senior Staff, and other Education City CIOs to create a unique learning environment. Before joining the CMU-Q campus in 2009, Steve served as the Director of Q-CERT, the computer security incident response team for the State of Qatar. Steve has also been the Deputy Director of the CERT program, one of the oldest and most respected computer security organizations, and the Director of Information Technology for the Software Engineering Institute, a Federally Funded Research and Development Center.
Prior to coming to Carnegie Mellon, Steve was the Manager of Data Networking at the University of Pittsburgh. There he led the transition to a new campus network, taught telecommunications management courses, worked with Academic Computing to provide student services, and participated in the creation of CERGE, the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education in Czechoslovakia.
In a career that’s spanned more than 30 years, Steve has developed solutions for industry, government, and academia in areas as diverse as seismic microzonation for more effective earthquake risk management, patient monitoring systems to support research in the operating room, microcomputer hardware and software design, and using buffer overflows for good, not evil.
