Main Commencement Ceremony

Sunday, May 15

Gesling Stadium, Carnegie Mellon University’s campus

9 a.m.
Gesling Stadium opens.

10:15 a.m.
Procession of Graduates begins. 

All guests should be seated by this time!

11 a.m.
Ceremony begins.

  • The ceremony lasts approximately 90 minutes.
  • Tickets are not issued or required. Seating is first come, first served.
  • The ceremony takes place outdoors in Gesling Stadium, rain or shine! The stadium is NOT covered and there is no shade. If you or a family member cannot be in the direct sunlight or heat for a long period of time, we strongly encourage you to watch the ceremony from one of our indoor simulcast locations. Additional information will be provided soon.
  • A webcast will also be available.
  • Caps and gowns are required for graduates.
  • Graduates will receive their diplomas at department diploma ceremonies, which take place throughout the weekend. Visit the diploma ceremonies page for a complete schedule.

Elderly & Special Needs Guests

  • The ceremony takes place outdoors in Gesling Stadium, rain or shine! Please remember that the stadium is NOT covered and there is no shade. If you or a family member cannot be in the direct sunlight or heat for a long period of time, we strongly encourage you to watch the ceremony from one of our indoor simulcast locations. Additional information will be provided soon.
  • Special Needs seating sections will be available on the field surface. These seats are reserved for those guests who are in wheelchairs, who have difficulty with stairs and cannot access the bleacher seating, or those guests who have special needs. Tickets or prior arrangement are not needed.

Other Guidelines

  • During the procession, ceremony and recession, guests should remain in their seats to keep the aisles clear.
  • Please do not wear spiked heels in the stadium.
  • Food, beverages (other than water) or chewing gum are prohibited in the stadium.
  • Complimentary bottles of water will be available for all guests.
  • Be sure to arrange a post-ceremony meeting location with your graduate.
