Main Commencement Ceremony

Sunday, May 15

Gesling Stadium, Carnegie Mellon University’s campus

9 a.m.
Gesling Stadium opens.

10 a.m.
Robing for graduates and ceremony participants begins.  Guests should proceed directly to the ceremony.

10:15 a.m.
Procession of Graduates begins. All guests should be seated by this time!

11 a.m.
Ceremony begins.

Addresses by the keynote speaker, student speaker and university president will highlight the ceremony. Graduates will receive their diplomas at department diploma ceremonies, which take place throughout the weekend. Visit the diploma ceremonies page for a complete schedule.

  • The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes.
  • Tickets are not issued or required.
  • Gesling Stadium opens at 9 a.m. Seating is first come, first served. View the seating and stadium map for more details.
  • The ceremony will take place outdoors in Gesling Stadium, rain or shine! The stadium is not covered and there is no shade
  • A webcast will also be available. Access information will be available in May.
  • Caps and gowns are required for graduates.

Elderly & Special Needs Guests

  • The ceremony takes place outdoors in Gesling Stadium, rain or shine! The stadium is not covered and there is no shade. If you or a family member cannot be in the direct sunlight or heat for a long period of time, we strongly encourage you to watch the ceremony from one of our indoor simulcast locations listed below.
  • Seating sections for guests with special needs will be available on the field in Gesling Stadium. View the seating and stadium map for more details. These seats are reserved for those guests who are in wheelchairs, who have difficulty with stairs and cannot access the bleacher seating, or those guests who have special needs. Tickets or prior arrangement are not needed.

Inclement Weather & Simulcast Locations

The ceremony takes place outdoors in Gesling Stadium, rain or shine! The stadium is not covered and there is no shade. If you or a family member cannot be in the direct sunlight or heat for a long period of time, we strongly encourage you to watch the ceremony from one of our indoor simulcast locations on the first floor of the Cohon University Center:

  • Wiegand Gym (Doors open at 9 a.m.)
  • Kirr Commons
  • McConomy Auditorium (Doors open at 10 a.m.)

Tickets are not issued or required. Seating is first come, first served.

Other Guidelines

  • During the procession, ceremony and recession, guests should remain in their seats to keep the aisles clear.
  • Please do not wear spiked heels in the stadium.
  • Food, beverages (other than water) or chewing gum are prohibited in the stadium.
  • Complimentary bottles of water will be available for all guests.
  • Be sure to arrange a post-ceremony meeting location with your graduate.
