Presidential Visit

Obama President Barack Obama addressed an invitation-only crowd in Wiegand Gymnasium on June 2. This was the first time the university has hosted a U.S. president. CMU President Jared L. Cohon called the president's speech an important progress report on the economic plan Obama laid out early last year. He said he was particularly pleased to hear the emphasis on clean energy and investments in education and research. Read more about the speech in this issue of the Piper.

Commencement Recap

Humanitarian Ian Rawson shared a message of perseverance and hope with graduates and their families. Watch his address, the student speaker's talk and President Cohon's charge to graduates. Images from commencement can be found in this month's Piper.

Ready for RoboCup

Thanks to a new physics-based planning algorithm, CMU's RoboCup players should be able to out-dribble most of the competition in Singapore June 19-25. Watch CMDragons' 6-inch-players practice their dribbling skills and read more about the project in this issue of the Piper.

Meeting of the Minds

More than 450 students presented their work at the 15th annual Meeting of the Minds undergraduate research symposium. Many projects grow out of students' coursework in their majors, while others typify the university's emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration to solve real-world problems. Watch students discuss their research on propulsion systems, vertical gardens and carbon emissions, and check out photos in the June Piper.

Thorpe's Thoughts

After serving six years as the inaugural dean of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Chuck Thorpe announced this spring that he was leaving the post to return to the Pittsburgh campus. Before leaving Doha, Thorpe gave a public lecture, "Six Quotes from Six Years in Qatar," on some of the lessons he learned as dean of Carnegie Mellon's first undergraduate branch campus. Read about his speech in the June Piper, or watch it online.
