Benefits of Being a C-MITES Teacher
Being a C-MITES teacher is personally rewarding and professionally challenging. Most of the students in C-MITES classes have been identified as academically talented and want to be there. Veteran C-MITES teachers find the time very rewarding; students are so thrilled to have a teacher challenge them and really make them think. Teachers are paid $1,000.00 per summer course taught (including time spent training and completing the necessary paperwork). The teacher salary for weekend workshops is $110.00 per 3-hour class. Classes of 10 or more will have a teaching assistant.
Teacher Time Commitment
- Teachers may participate in Weekend Workshops or Summer Progrmas or both.
- Selected summer program teachers will participate in a training session in the Pittsburgh area prior to the program’s start. Most summer courses are held either in late June or mid-July. Teachers should plan to spend approximately one hour before class and one hour after class each day preparing for the students and evaluating the day’s events. At the end of the two weeks, teachers complete a classroom observation for each student, which is returned to the C-MITES office for review and distribution within two weeks of the end of the program.
- Weekend workshop classes are either three or 6 hours in length and are offered on selected Saturdays and Sundays throughout the school year.
Profile of the Students
- Students in our summer programs are selected based on academic ability. Most or all of the 20 class participants will have taken the above-level test called the EXPLORE. They will have applied to the summer program by submitting their EXPLORE scores, a teacher recommendation form, and a written application form. Students have completed grades 3-8. Classes have grade levels grouped together; for example, Explorations in Science is offered to students who have completed third, fourth or fifth grade, while Robotics Programming and Design is for students who have completed sixth, seventh or eighth grade.
- Students who participate in Weekend Workshops are equally strong academically. They currently are in kindergarten through ninth grade.

Employment as a Teaching Assistant

A teaching certificate is not required for this position. To apply for one of these positions, complete the teaching assistant application and send the application, your resume, and two letters of reference to the C-MITES office. C-MITES TAs must be 18 years or older.
