National Society of Black Engineers
The mission of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and have a positive impact on the community. NSBE educates students about career opportunities in engineering and the sciences, builds leadership skills and performs community service. The organization promotes networking with other chapters and professionals across the nation.
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) mission is to promote and support Carnegie Mellon's Hispanic students aspiring toward careers in professional technical fields as well as students across all disciplines. Engineering, professionalism and Hispanic culture embody three focal points of our society. For more information please visit the SHPE web site.
Spanish and Latin American Student Association
The Spanish and Latin American Student Association (SALSA) increases campus awareness of issues specific to Latino and Hispanic-American students as well as international students from Spanish-speaking countries.
SPIRIT
SPIRIT is a student group that increases African-American awareness on campus. In addition to sponsoring cultural and social programs, SPIRIT performs joint community service activities with other student organizations and groups. Both members and non-members may reside in SPIRIT House, a special-interest residence available through University Housing. For more information please visit the SPIRIT web site.
MAPS
The Minority Association of Pre-health Students is an organization dedicated towards serving underserved populations specifically those that suffer from health disparities as well as be a resource for those students interested in a career in health. Though the name says minority, by no means is the organization exclusive; all are invited and encouraged to join, the only requisite being a dedication to community service. Throughout the year, we do a variety of different community service projects including diabetes walk, kidney walk, and volunteering at soup kitchens. In addition to this, we hold a number of meetings geared towards preparing our members to enter the health field.
