Career Event Title

During a career fair, CMU students and alumni are able to talk with employers about full-time and summer internship opportunities. The CPDC also offers career-related workshops and events open to all students during the academic year.  See below for information regarding career fairs, CPDC workshops and events.  

All career fairs are restricted to currently enrolled, degree-seeking Carnegie Mellon University students and alumni. You will be admitted on the day of the career fair by showing your Carnegie Mellon ID and/or your resume.

It’s important to look your best and feel prepared to communicate your story during any career event. Here are some resources to help you get started:

CICs are career events in NYC, DC, and Boston held over the January break.  The events have a morning career fair open to all undergraduates from the consortium schools and afternoon pre-arranged interviews

Interviewing Workshop

4:30pm - 5:30pm, MPW

Not sure how to prepare for a behavioral interview?  Come to this workshop to learn the basics.  Topics will include the STAR technique, employer research, and interview follow-up.


By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify resources for researching employers

  • Discuss your strengths and skills that relate directly to the positions for which you have applied

  • Plan and prepare for all phases of the behavioral interview process

Resume Writing Workshop - Basic

4:30pm - 5:30pm, Rangos 3

In this beginner workshop, you will learn the basics of how to create a resume including: the purpose of a well-crafted resume, various components of your resume, how to write an effective bullet point, as well as basic formatting rules.  


By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify the components/sections of a well-crafted resume

  • Explain how to write an effective and actionable bullet point



Resume Writing Workshop - Advanced

4:30pm - 5:30pm, Connan

In this advanced and interactive workshop, you will learn how to articulate your experience by creating effective and actionable bullet points.  You will also learn about recruiter tips and tricks for evaluating resumes as well as how to tailor your resume to specific opportunities.  Please bring a copy of your resume!


By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Construct effective and actionable bullet points

  • Explain how to tailor your resume to specific positions/opportunities

Career Fair Prep Workshop

4:30pm-5:30pm, MPW

Not sure what to expect at a job fair? Get tips on how to navigate the Spring Encompass and CAOC job fairs, such as how to research companies, how to dress, what to bring, how to follow-up with companies and much more. Attending this workshop will help you create a strategy for job fair success!

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe key facts regarding the dates, times and attending employers for spring job fairs
  • Conduct effective research on attending employers
  • Present yourself professionally to employers
  • Prepare a game plan for career fair success



Internship Showcase: An Internship Fair

4:00pm-6:00pm, Rangos 3

Connect with your peers to learn what a great internship experience can do for your job search.  CMU students from a variety of majors will be on hand to discuss their personal internship experiences with top companies, (such as Google, Deloitte, Credit Suisse, and IBM) government entities, startups, and smaller organizations.This campus-wide event is open to students from all majors, and will be especially valuable to students who want to discover creative ways to expand their career experience with an internship.

Elevator Pitch Practice (Self-Introduction) Workshop

4:30pm-5:30pm, MPW

This workshop will help you to create your 30-second elevator pitch (self-introduction) for the upcoming career fairs and other professional situations.  You will also then have the opportunity to practice your pitch with (and receive feedback from) a CPDC team member!


By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify 3-5 skills, strengths, and experiences you want to showcase to employers

  • Create, write, and develop an elevator pitch about 30 seconds long that mentions your skills, strengths and experiences  

  • Practice your elevator pitch with at least one career consultant

Information Sessions

Information Sessions are events hosted by employers on or near Carnegie Mellon's campus for students to:

  • Learn more about a company
  • Meet current employees of the company
  • Introduce themselves to recruiters of a company in which they have interest
  • Ask questions about specific jobs, company culture, etc.

All information sessions are posted in Handshake under the Events tab.

Quick 15-minute meetings with Career Consultants are available M-F, 11:30am-1:30pm at the West Wing 2nd floor Advising Center while school is in session.  No appointment necessary!
