General

What is OLI?
The Open Learning Initiative (OLI) offers intelligent tutoring systems, virtual laboratories and simulations that provide frequent opportunities for assessment and feedback. The OLI courses are intended to enact dynamic, flexible and responsive instruction that fosters learning. Beginning in the fall 2009 semester, Computing Services, in partnership with the OLI, will offer the first phase of a new hybrid course model for C@CM. Future phases of the hybrid course will be developed in collaboration with the C@CM Advisory Council.

What C@CM course topics are delivered through OLI?
In the first phase, the hybrid C@CM course will focus on file storage and sharing where you will learn strategies for choosing options that are efficient, dependable and secure.  You will learn how to apply these strategies to the specific file storage and sharing options they are afforded as members of the Carnegie Mellon community.

How do I sign in to C@CM in OLI?
C@CM students sign in to OLI using WebISO. Do NOT create an OLI account; this has been done for you along with your registration for the appropriate course section.

  1. Open your web browser and go to http://oli.web.cmu.edu/.
  2. Click the Carnegie Mellon Users Login Here link.
    login
  3. If you are not already signed in, the WebISO login will display. Enter your AndrewID and password.
  4. If this is your first time accessing OLI, you will be prompted to read and respond to the research consent agreement.
  5. The My Courses page will display, listing your courses.

How do I access my OLI course?
The following process will be demonstrated and reviewed during C@CM class.

I receive an “invalid ID or password” error when I attempt to login to the C@CM online course.
C@CM students should use the Carnegie Mellon Users Log in Here link to access the C@CM course.  This link displays a WebISO login that requires your AndrewID and password. Do NOT create an OLI account ID and password.

I can't remember my account ID or password.
Access to the C@CM course uses your AndrewID and password.  If you don’t remember your AndrewID and/or password, please see Managing Your Andrew Account Password .

How do I create an OLI account?
Do NOT create an OLI account. The required accounts are created in advance. C@CM students should simply sign in via the Carnegie Mellon Users link.  You’ll be prompted for your AndrewID and password.

What is a course key?
How do I register for C@CM in OLI?
My OLI account does not exist or I am not registered for C@CM?
The My Courses page references a course key. C@CM students do NOT need to enter a course key as you are registered for the C@CM course in advance. If you are not registered for C@CM in OLI or are registered for the wrong section, please contact the C@CM support team at c-cm@andrew.cmu.edu.

I am registered for the wrong C@CM section.
I have transferred or would like to transfer to a different C@CM section.
I have dropped or would like to drop C@CM.
Section changes can only be made by the C@CM Program Coordinator prior to the course add deadline.  Requests made prior to this date should be submitted to the C@CM support team via email to c-cm@andrew.cmu.edu.

When you transfer from one C@CM section to another, it may take a day or two for your OLI course registration to reflect this change. Student data will not transfer from one section to another.

What is the research consent form? How do I opt-in or opt-out of research?
OLI collects data for course improvement purposes. The research consent form explains the data we collect and how that data might be used. Students are given the option to opt in or out of this research. If you opt out, we will not use your data for research purposes. Opting out of the research will in no way affect your access to course materials, technical support or course grade.

You may change your status at any time by returning to the consent form. After signing in to OLI, click the Research consent form link located on the My Courses page. The link appears in the menu at left under the My Account heading.

Using OLI for C@CM

How do I test and configure my system/web browser for C@CM?
I was prompted to install a browser plug-in (e.g., Flash).
A feature is not working as expected. What should I do?
What software do I need to install on my computer to access C@CM?
Run Test and Configure for your course.  The Test and Configure link appears on the My Courses page (shown after sign in) as well as at the top of the Syllabus page.

Test and Configure performs an automated check to determine if your machine is compatible with the C@CM course. The check tests for required software, web browser plug-ins, etc. The results also provide instructions for downloading and installing any missing software.

The page loaded but an exercise or movie on the page did not.
The flash movies within some pages take time to load.  There may be a longer delay if your network connection is slow.  Verify your signal strength.  If you are still having problems, follow the steps to run Test and Configure.

The results of the test and configure check are not accurate.
The test and configure page indicates that I do not have a plugin or software installed, but I think I do.
There are several possible causes:

How do I enable pop-up windows?
Popup windows are not showing?
How do I enable cookies?
I received a warning about cookies being disabled?
Follow the instructions to run Test and Configure . Also, disable browser toolbars and extensions as they occasionally block pop-up windows and/or cookies.

Note: The OLI system verifies that cookies are enabled on the sign in page.  If you are able to sign in to OLI, then cookies are working properly.

Which computer clusters have the software I need for C@CM?
All of the Computing Services Clusters are configured properly for C@CM. Please visit the Clusters web page for a complete list of cluster locations.

Where can I see my scores?
Click the My Scores link to see your scores. The My Scores link is located on the My Courses page and also at the top of Syllabus page.

Note: Scores may not be available for manually graded activities. These grades will be posted no more than two class meetings after the homework was due.

OLI only reports some of my scores?
The OLI grade book only records the scores/grades for assignments completed with OLI. The scores for course assignments completed outside of OLI (e.g., in Blackboard, in class, etc.) will not appear in the OLI grade book. Students should ask their instructor if they have a question about a score.

I have a question about my score.
These questions should be directed to the course instructor.

I have a comments or suggestion regarding the course content; or I’d like to report an error or typographic mistake in the course.
Please report these items to the C@CM Support Team via email to c-cm@andrew.cmu.edu.

I accidentally submitted my work before I was finished, now I cannot change my answers.
Can you reset an exercise? I would like to try it again.
It is possible for instructors to reset activities within OLI. These questions should be directed to the course instructor.

Is there a way to print the OLI course materials?
We do not offer a way to print an entire course or module. The C@CM in OLI course contains interactive exercises which are important to the learning process. Studies show that printing the course leads to skipped exercises and a decrease in overall performance. We encourage you to work online and engage with the interactive exercises.

The OLI server is slow or my request timed out.
I received a server error. What should I do now?
OLI is not available; it appears that the server is down.
An error occurred when I tried to save or submit my quiz.

What is an Open & Free course?
Some OLI courses are freely available to individual learners as self-guided materials. Learners work through these courses independently and at their own pace. No academic credit is provided for Open & Free courses and they are not led by an instructor. Open & Free courses are available to everyone, including C@CM students. C@CM students are not required to access any of the Open & Free courses.

Blackboard

I can’t see my Blackboard course.
You will only be able to see the course after your instructor has made the Blackboard course available to you. Verify with your instructor that the course has been made available to you.

If the course has been made available,

I just changed my section and can’t see my Blackboard course.
I do not see my section in Blackboard.
If you changed your section, it will take 24 hours for the new section to appear in your Blackboard account.

The instructor did not receive my file through the Digital Dropbox.
The option to Add File within the Digital Dropbox is used to save your files within Blackboard.  To make the files visible to your instructor, you must click the Send File option.

My instructor cannot open my file in the Digital Dropbox.
Instructors receive an error message and cannot open files when the file name contains special characters and spaces.

Where and when is my section?
Please visit the official university schedule of classes to view the C@CM schedule of classes for days, times and instructors for each section.

I cannot see my grades.
Your instructor may not have graded your work yet.  Instructors are required to update the scores in Blackboard no more than two class meetings after the homework was due or an exam was administered.  Attendance is updated after each class session.
