Frequently Asked Questions For Carnegie Mellon students ONLY: 1. HHMI Scholars Program The HHMI Scholar program (previously called the Summer Undergraduate Research Program) is designed to give current Carnegie Mellon students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. degree chance to participate in summer research. This annual 10-week program provides intensive, individualized research experiences in various areas of the biological sciences, including molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, computational biology and bioinformatics, biochemistry, biophysics and neurobiology as well as in computer science and chemistry. Participants in the program receive a generous stipend and University dormitory housing. The core of the program consists of an individual research project carried out under the supervision of one of the participating faculty members. The scientific program also includes research presentations by faculty members, group discussion of articles from the scientific literature, presentations on career options and scientific ethics, and a concluding symposium in which all students present the results of their research. In addition to the scientific program, students can participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. The 2008 program will run from May 27 through August 1. The deadline for submitting the application is February 29, 2008 and the deadline for receiving supplemental information (i.e. Letters of rec, transcripts, etc) will be Friday, March 7, 2008. All participants must be in their sophomore or junior year at the time of application. HHMI Researcher Program The HHMI Researcher program allows students to participate in paid summer research, while maintaining the flexibility to take courses, prepare for the MCATs or GREs, or even participate in volunteer activities. The hours of commitment for the program are set by the student and their faculty mentor. The student also has the opportunity to attend an optional seminar program where they will have the opportunity to participate in active discussions of current literature work.
