Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities at Carnegie Mellon

2008 SURP participants

Undergraduate research is a key component of the scientific training in our department where students work closely with faculty members and their laboratory groups on cutting edge research projects. There are multiple ways to get involved, including paid positions, volunteer work and a summer scholars program. If you are considering taking advantage of this great opportunity for the summer, review the descriptions of the programs outlined below and e-mail bio-undergrad-research@andrew.cmu.edu, or any faculty member in the Department.

The following programs support research efforts by qualified undergraduate students:

Research programs for Carnegie Mellon students ONLY

Research programs for students from other institutions

Funding and History

In 1987, the Department of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University founded the Summer Undergraduate Research Program with support from the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program of the Directorate for Biological Sciences of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Since 1989, the SURP has also been supported by a grant from the Undergraduate Science Education Program of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Starting in 1998, the program has included Beckman Scholars supported by the Beckman Foundation. The Department of Biological Sciences was awarded a NSF-REU site in 2005. In 2006, the USDA joined the agencies supporting SURP students.
