Healthcare

All graduate students are required to have health insurance while enrolled at Carnegie Mellon. [NOTE: If you are carried on your parents' or spouse/partner's health insurance, you must determine if you qualify for a waiver from University Insurance - please read the information attached or on the website shown below carefully]. The University offers two levels of health plans; the Department of Biological Sciences provides funding for the basic, individual medical insurance plan for its students, which is disbursed in your monthly paycheck from September through May. Students may opt for a different level of health plan and pay the difference. Each student must make arrangements to either pay for their insurance at the beginning of the semester, or elect the payment plan over the course of the academic year. Health insurance costs are not paid or deducted automatically - payment is your responsibility.

More information is available at the Student Health Services website.

Fees

Each student must pay his/her own Technology Fee ($75 per semester, for a total of $150). This amount will appear on your student account and it is your responsibility to pay. As in the past, the Department will continue to pay the Student Activity and Bus Fees. It should be noted that your Student Activities Fee provides monetary support for your Graduate Student Organization account and other lower cost activities subsidized by the GSA.
