The Synthesis and Characterization of a New Cyanine Dye
A new cationic cyanine dye has been synthesized and investigated for its DNA binding ability. This dye features a three carbon methine bridge linking two phenyl substitutents.We analyzed the binding activity of this cyanine dye with poly(dGdC)2,poly(dAdT)2 and calf thymus DNA. The spectroscopic data revealed that the dye exhibited weak binding interactions with these DNA duplexes. The only binding interaction we supposed that exists is most likely a counter ion interaction due to the positive charge on the dye. The phenyl substituents introduce steric hindrance that can inhibit any strong binding interaction with DNA.
