Departmental Life Sciences Award Presented at PJAS Competition

On February 7, the Carnegie Mellon University Department of Biological Sciences Life Sciences Award was presented to Chareeni Kurukulasuriya, a ninth grade student at Taylor Alderdice High School, during the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) Region 7 science fair competition. Kurukulasuriya received the award for her presentation on “The Effects of Omega 3 Fatty Acid DHA on Melanoma Tissue Cells.”

The award recognizes the student with a high general competition score, an excellent presentation, and a detailed understanding of their topic within the areas of biochemistry, biology, botany, chemistry, ecology, microbiology or zoology.

This year’s competition was held at Keystone Oaks High School. Junior and senior high school students from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties were eligible to participate in the event.
