Summer Research Institute
For Carnegie Mellon Students
We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for rising sophomores in technical fields - the Summer Research Institute (SRI). The SRI program began in 2002 at Carnegie Mellon University. If you are interested in doing research in molecular biology and biochemistry in the summer of 2013, please read on and apply by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2013.
Eligibility and Length of Program
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is supporting a Summer Research Institute (SRI) for Carnegie Mellon students who will complete their first year in the Science & Humanities Scholars Program, Bachelor of Science and Arts Degree Program, Mellon College of Science, Marianna Brown Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Carnegie Institute of Technology or School of Computer Science. The program will be held during the summer session at Carnegie Mellon and will run for 10 weeks. Students will receive university housing and a stipend.
The 2013 program dates are Tuesday, May 28 – Friday, August 2.
Research
All students and the affiliated teaching personnel will work together and be immersed in doing research from day one of the 10 week program. Students are expected to fully participate in the entire program and they should not plan other educational activities or extensive travel plans during this period. Research projects will involve recombinant DNA techniques and biochemical methods directed towards the functional analysis of proteins and enzymes. In addition to wet laboratory techniques, students will use software for DNA analysis and experimental design.
Requirements
Rising sophomore standing (i.e. students in the second semester of their first year) with at least one college-level course in biology (AP, transfer, or 03-121) at some time prior to the start of the program.
Application Process
The following items will be part of your application:
- Questions addressing your interest and motivation for participating in the SRI experience.
- Your date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.
- The name of a professor or teaching assistant (and their contact information – department, phone, email) who is willing to provide a reference for your application. A letter of recommendation is NOT required, but the application reviewers may contact your reference, if necessary.
Previous research experience, while not required, will also be considered as part of the application. Application materials are due by 5:00 PM on Monday, February 18, 2013. Applicants will be notified of their application status by Friday, March 1, 2013.
For Future Teachers
We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for rising junior and senior biology majors with additional secondary educational certification - the Summer Research Institute (SRI-FFT). This summer will mark the twelfth year for the SRI program at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Formerly, this program hosted only CMU students. We are now piloting an expansion of the program to include pre-service biology teachers. If you are interested in learning about how research in molecular biology and biochemistry is done and how to bring the excitement for research to your classroom, please read on and apply by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013.

Experience
In addition to gaining analytical and problem solving skills by working with CMU faculty, you will be working along side practicing teachers and other students in team-based, self-designed research projects. There will also be opportunities for pre-service and practicing teachers to mentor high schools students in our outreach programs that focus on research techniques.
Application Process
The following items will be part of your application:
- A short (less than one page) essay addressing your interest and motivation for participating in the SRI-FFT experience.
- Official transcripts from the institution you are attending.
- Letters of recommendation from two professors (preferably one science professor and one education professor).
