DBS: CHAPTER 2

Getting Started

Material Covered in this Manual

All the Financial Information Systems (FRIS, B-MARS, DBS) operate on the Data General computer named Utopia. Before accessing the CMU Budget System, you must be a CMU FRIS user. If you are not, you need to apply for access. Please call ACCOUNTING SERVICES at ext. 8-2087 for an application. This process takes about 3-5 days from the time Accounting receives your completed applicaton. Once your FRIS/Budget System request for access has been approved, a UserId and an account will be created for you on Utopia. You will be notified when these have been established. This chapter describes how to connect and log in using your UserId, and how to run an application.

The Data General computer supports a variety of terminals and computers: the IBM line of Personal Computers (PC, XT, AT, PS2 ...) running DOS, Windows for DOS, Macintosh's (Macintosh, Plus, SE, II, IIx ...) Andrew/Microvax Workstations and Next computers.

If you are a new user, this manual assumes that you are familiar with your computer or terminal and its keyboard. When you log in for the first time, you are prompted for your terminal type or terminal emulation type. If you are unsure of your terminal type, please refer to the Identifying Terminal Type subsection. If you need further assistance, please call ext. 8-2835 and leave your name, department, and extension. An Administrative Computing and Information Services staff member will return your call as soon as possible and assist you.
