Tartans Drop UAA Contest to #2 Chicago

Jan. 13 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team dropped an University Athletic Association (UAA) contest to #2 University of Chicago on Friday night in Pittsburgh. The Maroons pressed early and ran away with an 81-44 victory to improve their record to 13-0 and 2-0 while the Tartans fell to 6-7 and 0-2.
The Tartans had trouble finding the goal in the first period, shooting just 20% from the field while the Maroons dropped in 55%, making 16 more shots than the home team. The shooting disparity led to a Chicago lead of 48-19 at the break.
Chicago began the second period with a 9-2 run before the Tartans answered with a 7-2 run behind a driving layup by freshman
Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and a trey by freshman
MacKenzie Boyd (Plano, Texas/Plano West).
West finished as the Tartans high scorer with 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Junior
Jennifer Larsen (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) and freshman
Aspen McKeever (Durango, Colo./Durango) each tallied six points while junior
Elissa Goldner (Somers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) scored twice in the second half for four points. Sophomore
Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) led on the boards with six.
Chicago was led by senior Taylor Simpson who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes. Freshman Hannah Ballard came off the bench to score 13 points while freshman Claire Devaney dished out four assists off the bench.
The Tartans will next welcome #8 Washington University on Sunday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m.
