Hour of Power for Cancer Research

Nov. 8 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – As the Carnegie Mellon University men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads prepare for their third meet of the season on Saturday, November 12, they took time out Tuesday to help fight cancer. For the fourth consecutive year, the team participated in the Ted Mullin: Hour of Power.

Started in 2006, the Ted Mullin Hour of Power relay initially included 16 teams, and has since expanded to over 140 collegiate, high school, and club programs. The relay lasts one hour and is a continual all-out sprint at maximum effort. The Hour of Power relay is in honor of Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin, who died in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare-soft tissue cancer. Over the past five years, participating programs have raised money for the Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. Since 2006, the Hour of Power has raised over $265,000 in donations for sarcoma research.

Hour of Power: Carnegie MellonThe men’s and women’s swim team raised funds in the University Center on Monday, November 7 and Tuesday, November 8, with their team event taking place at 5:00 p.m. in the pool on Tuesday, November 8. Bracelets were sold and donations were accepted. There will be a Public Hour of Power event on Sunday, November 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the University Center pool.
