Hour of Power Against Cancer
Nov. 6 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Even though the Carnegie Mellon University men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads are on their only bye of the first semester, their members are focusing their efforts on perhaps their toughest opponent: Cancer. For the second consecutive year, the team will be participating in the Ted Mullin: Hour of Power on Tuesday, November 10.
Started in 2006, the Ted Mullin Hour of Power relay initially included 16 teams, and has since expanded to over 100 collegiate, high school, and club programs. The relay lasts one hour and is a continual all-out sprint at maximum effort. The Hour of Power relay is in honor of Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin, who died in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare-soft tissue cancer. Over the past four years, participating programs have raised money for the Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. Since 2006, the Hour of Power has raised over $110,000 in donations for sarcoma research.
The men’s and women’s swim team will be raising funds in the University Center Thursday, November 5 through Tuesday, November 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of Kirr Commons, with the event being at 5:00 PM in the pool on Tuesday, November 10.
For those who care to contribute by check, they can be made payable to University of Chicago with Ted Mullin Fund and Carnegie Mellon in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to:
