Tartans Top Clarion in Season-Opening Meet

Oct. 31 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team won nine events, sweeping four, on its way to a 158-136 win over visiting Clarion University on Saturday afternoon at the University Center Pool.

The meet started with a win in the 200-yard medley relay by the Tartans designated "B" team. Junior Michael Panzitta (Dallas, Pa./Bishop Hoban), senior Jason Huber (Cherry Hill, N.J.), freshman Dan Glaser-Garbrick (Dayton, Ohio/Centreville) and junior Joshua Mathews (Upper Falls, Md./Perry Hall) finished in 1:38.38 just ahead of the "A" team of senior Scott Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), senior Andrew Seo (Irvine, Calif./Northwood), junior Travis Piper (Ft. Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and senior Jeff Dahlen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano) who touched in 1:39.16.

The first sweep of the meet came in the 1,000-yard freestyle as senior Jonas Altman-Kurosaki (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant) touched first in 10:01.31. Junior Frank Olechnowicz (Alexandria, Va./ Thomas Jefferson) was second in 10:12.31 and senior Gates Winkler (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic) was third in 10:20.03.

Altman-Kurosaki also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.27 while Glaser-Garbrick won two individual events in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard butterfly. Glaser-Garbrick led a sweep of the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.41 as freshman Brandon Yee (Danville, Calif./Monta Vista) finished second in 1:58.41. and freshman Arthur Hong (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) was third in 2:01.92.

The Tartans also ruled the pool in the breaststroke as they swept both the 100- and 200-yard events. Huber led in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.31 with Seo right behind in 1:00.66. Sophomore Ben Howe (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) was third in 1:02.81. In the 200-yard race, Seo got the best of Huber as they traded places with Seo touching in 2:14.70 and Huber in 2:16.00. Sophomore Michael Rong (Highland Park, N.J.) was third as he touched in 2:17.41.

Carnegie Mellon also saw success in the backstroke as Panzitta topped Dahlen in the 100-yard event by .20 with a time of 54.39. In the 200-yard race, senior Alex Hanson (Burnsville, Minn.) touched ahead of Dahlen in 1:57.39 as Dahlen touched in 2:00.55.

The Tartans will next be in action on Saturday, November 14, as they travel north to Grove City College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
