Head Men's Basketball Coach

Tony Wingen enters his 22nd season with the Tartans. During the 2008-09 season he guided the Tartans to the best season in school history. That season, the Tartans tied the school record for most wins in a season with 20 and won the program’s first-ever NCAA postseason game against Brockport State on March 6, 2009.

Wingen took the program to new heights in 2005-06 with the program’s first 20-win season. He guided that team to the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. In 2007-08, Wingen led the Tartans to their first-ever ECAC South Championship over Gwynedd-Mercy, 75-67.

On February 3, 2006, Wingen became Carnegie Mellon’s all-time leader in wins when the Tartans defeated Washington University 79-72 for his 174th victory as the university’s head coach. A member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and chairman of the NABC committee on academics, Wingen also served as a member of the Great Lakes Region Selection Committee for the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Wingen and his coaching staff were honored as the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year in back-to-back seasons, 2004-2006. In 2006, he was named Great Lakes Coach of the Year.

Wingen has had four players play professional basketball during his coaching career at Carnegie Mellon and six overall. Kevin Byrne ’96, Eliot Goren ’05, Nate Maurer ’06 and Greg Gonzalez ’08 were the four Tartans under Wingen to play professionally. Bary Dunn, an ’06 graduate, also competed internationally, as he was part of the United States Inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games that competed in Sydney, Australia in 2006. Matthew Pettit ’11 continued his playing career as well, playing for the BK Miners club team in Norway.

Previously, Wingen spent two years as head coach at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., where his team compiled a 21-28 record. Wingen served as an assistant for the University of the South from 1986-88 before becoming the program’s head coach in 1988.

Wingen began his coaching career at his alma mater, Springfield College, as an assistant from 1982-85. He also served as an assistant coach at Brown University in 1985-86. That same year, the Bears won the Ivy League Championship and recently the team has been inducted into the Brown Hall of Fame.

Wingen earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1982 from Springfield College and received his master’s degree in athletic administration from Springfield in 1983. In addition to coaching, he also serves as Carnegie Mellon’s Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities Management and Events. His duties include scheduling and event management.

For his success on the court, the Enfield, Conn., native was inducted into the Enfield Community Hall of Fame in September 2006. He and his wife, Kris, live in Mt. Lebanon. They have three children, Corey (26), head athletic trainer at Wilmington College, Sara (23), a 2010 graduate of Carnegie Mellon, and Jessica (20), a junior and member of the women’s basketball team at the College of Wooster.
