Rich Erdelyi enters his 26th year on Carnegie Mellon's staff and 22nd year as head golf coach. The 2009 team won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and finished 22nd in the nation after competing in the 2009 NCAA Golf Championship, a program first. Christopher Lee became the fourth golfer under Erdelyi to win the UAA title as Erdelyi was once again named UAA Coach of the Year.
"The golf team is made up of a group of hard-working, dedicated golfers," Erdelyi said. Carnegie Mellon competes in the UAA Championship, which features Brandeis, Case Western Reserve, Emory, New York and Rochester.
The Tartans have placed third or better in UAA play 12 of the last 14 years. "The students go out, play their best and have a good time doing it, which is what Division III golf is all about," Erdelyi said.
Erdelyi was named the 1998, 2006 and 2009 UAA Golf Coach of the Year while mentoring the 1995, 2006, 2007 and 2009 Individual Medalists.
He has coached 15 Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-America Scholars including two in 2010; Michael Cheng and Terence Einhorn. Erdelyi has also coached two CoSida Academic All-Americans and seven All-Region golfers, including Einhorn and Ian Bangor last season.
Prior to joining the Carnegie Mellon staff, Erdelyi was an administrative assistant and football scout for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League during the 1983 and 1984 seasons. A native of Highland Park, N.J., Erdelyi earned seven varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball at Highland Park High School. Erdelyi was also an All-County and All-Central New Jersey selection as a senior center and linebacker.
Erdelyi is a recipient of Highland Park's Dr. Robert Weiss Memorial Trophy for devotion to athletics. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1970 from the University of Pittsburgh.
