The Academic Bowl is more than a trophy, as it emphasizes a “Commitment to Academic and Athletic Excellence”. The Spartans won the first Academic Bowl Trophy in 1986, defeating Carnegie Mellon 21-14. In the all-time Academic Bowl series, the Tartans hold a 15-8 advantage over Case and also lead the all-time series 26-12. Their first-ever meeting was in 1970, as the Tartans defeated Case 21-0. Last season Case defeated Carnegie Mellon in Cleveland, 38-13, marking its second straight victory.
Carnegie Mellon enters Saturday’s contest with a 5-3 overall record and a 1-0 mark in UAA play, as the Cardinal and Gray had a come-from-behind 21-13 victory over Washington University last Saturday. Case brings a perfect 8-0 record and 1-0 UAA mark to the gridiron on Saturday. The Spartans defeated the University of Chicago last week, 38-24.
