Athletic Department Sponsors Dinner for Senior Class

Seniors from Carnegie Mellon University’s athletic department enjoyed a dinner on Monday, February 25 focusing on post-graduate financial lessons and what to expect when they leave the halls and playing fields of Carnegie Mellon. The dinner was part of the Tartan Excellence Forum for staff professional development and student-athlete education.

Fifty-five senior student-athletes attended the dinner which included two alumni guest speakers, Amy Buxbaum HSS ’92 and Roger Roble TSB ’86. Both speakers focused on what to expect after graduation and provided financial advice.

Buxbaum was a member of the women’s basketball team and still holds the career record for rebounds with 933. She currently is the Director of Athletics at Chatham University and was previously the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Juniata College for five years. Prior to entering a career path in athletics, Buxbaum earned her law degree in 1995 from the University of Pennsylvania and practiced law for two years. Buxbaum sited passion as one of the reasons for her career change reflecting back to a time when she was told she didn’t have enough passion during a game. She realized she lacked the trait and sought the career that would bring it back.

Roble, an Academic All-American on the football team in 1985, graduated with his M.B.A. degree in 1986 and is currently the President of Roble, Belko & Company which he founded in 2000. His investing career spans 20 years and includes stints at CS First Boston in New York and A.G. Edward’s Chicago office. Roble spoke on topics concerning future investment and showed appreciation for his time at Carnegie Mellon and what that time, both in the classroom and on the football field, has afforded him. He answered student questions about finances and budget planning and what investments they should make.
