Carnegie Mellon Opens New Playing Facility
August 18, 2010
The Carnegie Mellon men’s and women’s soccer teams have a new place to call home. Just three months after construction began on the university’s new playing field, the soccer teams began preseason practice at the new facility on Wednesday morning.
Earlier in the week, the student-athletes gathered at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the field before stepping on the turf for the first time.
“The field is a tremendous addition for the university and its athletics facilities,” said Director of Athletics Susan Bassett. “We are thrilled with the finished project and can’t wait to see the field brimming with activity every day.”
While the soccer teams will practice and compete on the field this fall, the facility will also be used for intramurals, club sports and general campus recreation. The all-season FieldTurf surface will be open throughout the academic year and will provide greater opportunities for the Carnegie Mellon community to engage in physical activity and recreation.
Construction on the field began in May and took less than three months to complete. In addition to the regulation field, a designated throwing area for track and field student-athletes was also constructed.
