Carnegie Mellon Hosts Leadership Symposium for Sophomore Student-Athletes
Jan. 19 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon Athletics Department opened the semester with a special program on Monday, January 16, as sports psychologist Greg Shelley discussed leadership with the Tartans’ sophomore student-athletes. Part of the athletics department’s Excellence Forum, the leadership symposium was attended by nearly 100 second-year athletes.
“Dr. Greg Shelley is an awesome member of our Performance Team. His role in our Leadership Symposium is central to our philosophy that developing leadership skills will serve our students well in their efforts as students and as athletes at Carnegie Mellon and beyond,” said Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Susan Bassett. “Greg is among our ‘X’ Factors in achieving Peak Performance.”
A professor at Ithaca College, Dr. Shelley is a performance consultant who has worked closely with Carnegie Mellon student-athletes and department staff over the past seven years. Shelley led the first-year student-athletes through a leadership symposium in September.
“I want to challenge you to think bigger, better and outside the box,” Shelley told the sophomores. “Leadership is about making a choice to lead and developing the attitude to lead.”
Carnegie Mellon’s Excellence Forum was developed by Bassett to provide student-athletes with the skills necessary to excel both on and off the field. Through its commitment to excellence, the athletics department hopes to explore cutting-edge ideas that will establish Carnegie Mellon and its student-athletes as leaders of the next generation.
