Sophomore Leadership Symposium with Greg Shelley
Jan. 20 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon’s sophomore student-athletes received a treat on Monday, January 17, as sports psychologist Greg Shelley discussed leadership with the group of Tartans. Part of the athletics department’s Excellence Forum, the leadership symposium was attended by more than 75 second-year athletes.
“We are fortunate to have Dr. Shelley come to Carnegie Mellon to offer important leadership programming for our students.” said Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Susan Bassett. “We are providing our student-athletes with opportunities in every domain to realize their potential as students and as athletes. Leadership development provides critical skills that will equip our students for success in every endeavor they pursue, now as student-athletes and later in life in their careers.”
A professor at Ithaca College, Dr. Shelley is a performance consultant who has worked closely with Carnegie Mellon student-athletes and department staff over the past six years. Shelley led the first-year student-athletes through a leadership symposium in September.
“Dr. Shelley really encourages people to take an honest self evaluation of themselves,” said sophomore football student-athlete Sam Thompson. “He emphasized what a difference one person can make with a team or group of people. It's important to be reminded of that, and that each of us has the power to make a positive or negative impact with our actions.”
