Former Athletic Director Frank Melvin "Mel" Cratsley Passes After 89 Years

Mar. 20 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon lost a part of their community when Frank Melvin "Mel" Cratsley died last week from complications related to congestive heart failure at age 89. From 1949 through 1966, Cratsley was head men’s basketball coach at Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University. He also served as the school's athletic director during the 1960’s.

“Mel Cratsley as an athlete, coach and administrator was the most recognized figure in Carnegie Mellon sports over the span of four decades,” said Carnegie Mellon Director of Athletics Susan Bassett. “When you begin to list the most influential people in Carnegie Mellon history you start with Mel.”

While serving as head basketball coach he led the Tartans to a 173-208 mark. He ranks second on the schools all-time win list, behind current head coach Tony Wingen (190).

“Coach Cratsley is one of the true legends in Carnegie Mellon and Pittsburgh sports history. I am honored to have known him,” comments Wingen.
