Carnegie Mellon Department of Athletics Honors Past Basketball Champions

Feb. 10 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – On Friday, February 4, the Carnegie Mellon University Department of Athletics welcomed back four championship basketball teams to Skibo Gymnasium as part of a basketball reunion weekend centered around the Tartans’ home University Athletic Association doubleheader. The event was orchestrated to honor members of the 1976-77 men’s basketball team, 1988-89 and 1990-91 women’s basketball teams and the 2005-06 men’s basketball team that won league championships and participated in the NCAA tournament.

Members of the teams, along with other basketball alums, congregated on the historic Skibo Gymnasium stage for a reception during the women’s basketball game versus Washington University in St. Louis. At halftime of the men’s game, the championship players were honored in front of a home crowd of 900 for their accomplishments over the years.

Also in attendance was former men’s head coach Dave Maloney. Coach Maloney was at the helm of the Tartans from 1975 until 1983 and compiled a record of 87-84. He coached the program’s single-season leaders in points, assists and field-goal percentage, along with two 1,000-point scorers.

The 1976-77 men’s team won the first-ever Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship with a record of 18-6, including a 13-1 run through the PAC. With the PAC title in hand, the team became the first in program history to advance to the NCAA tournament. The team still holds the school record for most consecutive wins with 12 during its championship run.

The 1988-89 women’s team won the PAC Championship with a record of 20-7 overall and an 11-1 conference mark. They advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament during the first appearance in school history.

Two seasons later, four members of the first championship team in school history became champions again as the 1990-91 team won the program’s only UAA title with an overall record of 21-6 and a league record of 12-2. The team competed in the NCAA tournament again and climbed to 16th in the final national poll.

Most recently, the 2005-06 men’s team made school history when it won the program’s first UAA Championship and compiled a school-record 20 wins.

Following Friday night’s festivities, all alums were invited to attend the current teams’ Saturday practices and engage in friendly competition including a co-ed alumni game. In the evening, the group gathered at Doc’s Place in Shadyside for a light reception.
