Tartans Close Tournament with 2 Wins
Sept. 8 – (WOOSTER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team closed their weekend with two wins at the College of Wooster Kilt Classic Saturday, September 8. The two wins came against Westminster College and Alma College with scores of 3-2 and 3-0, respectively. The Tartans are now 3-6 on the season.
In the five game win over Westminster, the Tartans tied the score at 1-1 and then again at 2-2 to force the fifth game. Five players had double digit kills with senior Kate Stepp (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) leading the way with 15. Junior Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) and freshman Caroline Size (Lewes, Del./Saint Thomas Moore Academy) each had 14 kills while sophomore Jessica Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and senior Abbie Toney (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) had 11 and 10, respectively. Sophomore setter Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor) dished out 67 assists and scored four service aces with three block assists. Defensively Carter had 10 digs.
Stepp and freshman Cameron Griffin (Lake Forest, Ill.) each had 14 digs, while Brackin led the team at the net with seven block assists against the Titans.
Carnegie Mellon finished the weekend with their first three game match of the year winning 30-22, 30-24, 30-17. Brackin and Toney led the team with nine kills apiece as Carter collected 34 assists. Sophomore Liz DeVleming (Mercer Island, Wash.)and Griffin each had three service aces and Griffin led the defense with 17 digs. Sophomore Cara Fatigati (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) chipped in 11 digs. Brackin was big again at the net with two block solos and two block assists.
The weekend started with two 3-1 losses to Mount Union and Muskingum. Size had 22 kills, while Carter totaled 99 assists for the two matches.
The Tartans return to action with their first game at home on Wednesday, September 12 against Point Park at 7:00 p.m.
