Volleyball Falls in Five to #7 Washington (Mo.)

Sept. 29 – (NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s volleyball team competed at the first day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 Saturday, September 29 held on the campus of New York University.  The Tartans faced the 7th ranked team in the nation, the Washington University Bears, and took the Bears to five games dropping a 3-2 decision, 30-23, 30-27, 27-30, 28-30, 15-7. The Tartans drop to 7-8 overall, while Washington improves to 9-4.

After dropping the first to games, Carnegie Mellon rallied to knot the match at two apiece.  The fifth and deciding game was controlled by Washington winning 15-7 to take the match from the Tartans in the first match of the UAA Round Robin #1.  

Junior middle hitter Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) led the Tartans with 15 kills, while three other Tartans recorded double digit kills. Sophomore Jessica Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) totaled 13, freshman outside hitter Caroline Size (Lewes, Del./St. Thomas Moore Academy) 11 and senior middle hitter added Abbie Toney (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) 10 in the loss.

Brackin had two service aces and tallied seven total blocks, while freshman Cameron Griffin (Lake Forest, Ill.) had 17 digs defensively for the Tartans.

Sophomore setter Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O’Connor) recorded 53 assists, giving her nine matches of 40 or more assists this season.  

Carnegie Mellon will continue play Sunday, September 30, as they play Chicago at 9:00 am followed by Case Western Reserve at 11:30 am.
