Volleyball Finishes UAA First Round with Two Wins;

Kelly Earns 300th Career Victory

Sept. 30 – (NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The volleyball team of Carnegie Mellon University finished the University Athletic Association (UAA) first round robin with two wins and head coach Kim Kelly earned her 300th career victory with the morning's 3-1 win over the University of Chicago. The Tartans second win of the day came against Case Western Reserve University, 3-2, and moved their overall record to 9-8 and their UAA record to 2-1.

After dropping the first game against Chicago 30-24, the Tartans fired back with three straight wins, 30-20, 30-28 and 30-26 to take the 3-1 victory. A pair of sophomores in Megan Killeen (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Jessica Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) led the attack with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor) tallied 50 assists, six digs, one block solo and two block assists in the match. Killeen, freshman Cameron Griffin (Lake Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Liz DeVleming (Mercer Island, Wash.) each had three service aces while Griffin led the defense with 23 digs.

Against Case Western, the Tartans started with a 2-0 lead thanks to scores of 30-24 and 30-17 before allowing the Spartans to tie the score at 2-2. Carnegie Mellon regrouped at the break and took the fifth and deciding game 15-8 for the win. Junior Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) had double digit kills with 10 and totaled five blocks with three block assists. Carter collected 46 assists, three total blocks, and eight digs. Griffin again led the defense with 24 digs and Killeen and sophomore Cara Fatigati (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp) had three service aces apiece.

Carnegie Mellon will host their annual invitational on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6 at the University Center. The Tartans will open play on Friday against Franklin & Marshall at 6:30 p.m.
