Volleyball Overpowers La Roche
Oct. 17 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s volleyball team squared off against the La Roche Redhawks in Skibo Gymnasium on Wednesday, October 17 and came away with a 3-0 victory, winning 30-17, 30-15, 30-20. The win improves the Tartans’ record to 15-10 overall, while La Roche falls to 2-23.
After taking game one, the Tartans fell behind 13-9 in game two before scoring 21 of the last 23 points leading to the 30-15 victory. During the Tartans run, sophomore setter Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O’Connor) served ten straight points including two service aces. The Redhawks started the third game like the second taking a 9-7 advantage. Tartan freshman libero Cameron Griffin (Lake Forest, Ill.) put a stop to La Roche’s run as she served the next nine points giving Carnegie Mellon the lead for good.
The Tartans were led by freshman outside hitter Caroline Size (Lewes, Del./St. Thomas Moore Academy) with ten kills including six in the game three. Junior middle hitter Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) added seven kills for the Tartans, while senior Abbie Toney (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) recorded six in the win.
Carter tallied 37 assists and finished with five service aces for the Cardinal and Gray. Defensively, sophomore Jessica Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) recorded five total blocks and Amaechi added three.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s volleyball team will next be in action in the Juniata Tournament October 19-20. They are scheduled to begin play on Friday, October 19 at 4 p.m. against host Juniata.
