Volleyball Sweeps Competition on Final Day of Home Invite

Oct. 6 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon volleyball team swept a pair of matches Saturday at their annual invitational to improve to 12-8 on the year. The two day invite saw the Tartans defeat Franklin & Marshall Friday night and follow that up with victories over Lake Erie College and Pitt-Greensburg during the day Saturday.

The Tartans opened Saturday by sweeping Lake Erie College 30-24, 30-22, and 30-14. The Tartans received a balanced offensive attack throughout with ten players registering a kill in the match. Senior Abbie Toney (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) collected a game-high six of her match-high eight in the second game. Freshman Caroline Size (Lewes, Del./Saint Thomas Moore Academy) and sophomore Megan Killeen (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) each added seven kills in the match.

Sophomore Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor) picked up 37 assists in the three games and freshman Cameron Griffin (Lake Forest, Ill.) led the Tartans with ten digs.

The Tartans concluded their Saturday by beating Pitt-Greensburg 30-13, 30-22, and 30-27. Sophomore Jessica Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) led the team with 11 kills, including six in the third game. Junior Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) also managed to collect six kills in game three, and she finished the match with eight.

Carter tallied 33 assists and Griffin made 12 digs. Griffin also collected nine service aces over the three games.

The Carnegie Mellon volleyball team will lay their 2-1 University Athletic Association (UAA) record on the line and travel to Case Western Reserve University this upcoming weekend to participate in the UAA Round Robin #2. On Saturday, October 13 the Tartans are scheduled to play New York University and Brandeis University with action starting at 10 a.m.
