Tartans Start Invite with 3-1 Win

Oct. 5 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University's volleyball team opened their annual invitational with a 3-1 win over Franklin & Marshall Friday night. The Tartans are now 10-8 on the year.

The Tartans started strong with a 30-18 game one win behind the strong hitting of freshman Caroline Size (Lewes, Del./Saint Thomas Moore Academy). Size tallied seven of the teams 13 kills for the game, while senior Abbie Toney (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) collected four.

Game two went to the Diplomats, 30-28, despite the Tartans charge to tie it late 27-27. Junior Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) picked up five of her 12 kills in the game.

Carnegie Mellon returned to form in the third game winning 30-21 and then took game four by a score of 30-22. The Diplomats challenged when down 18-15 to take the lead 19-18 before the Tartans used Carter's serve and hitting by senior Kate Stepp (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Size to run to a 24-20 advantage. Amaechi's presence at the net helped as the Cardinal and Gray propelled themselves to the 30-22 win.

For the match, five Tartans totaled double digit kills as Toney led with 14. Size joined Amaechi with 12 kills and Stepp and sophomore Jessica Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) each had 10.

Sophomore Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor) collected 56 assists and three service aces. Defensively, freshman Cameron Griffin (Lake Forest, Ill.) led with 13 digs while sophomore Liz DeVleming (Mercer Island, Wash.) and Stepp each had eight. Amaechi totaled six blocks for the match.
