Volleyball Goes 3-1 at Home Crossover
Sept. 22 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon Volleyball Team hosted their annual Crossover Tournament Friday and Saturday, September 21-22. After splitiing a pair of matches Friday night, 3-1 over Otterbein and a 3-0 a setback to #21 Capital, they won two on Saturday 3-2 over John Carroll and 3-0 over Muskingum. The Tartans even their recorcd at 7-7 and Head Coach Kim Kelly now has 299 career victories.
In the five game win over John Carroll, the Tartans led 2-0 before John Carroll won two straigh forcing a fifth game. Three players had double digit kills with senior Kate Stepp (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) leading the way with 13. Sophomore Jessica Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and junior Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor) dished out 53 assists and recorded two service aces with three block assists. Defensively Carter had 17 digs.
Carnegie Mellon finished the weekend with a three game match winning 30-14, 30-28, 30-27. Freshman Caroline Size (Lewes, Del./Saint Thomas Moore Academy) led the team with 15 kills, while junior Julianne Bierwirth (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) had a career-high 10. Carter ended her weekend with 43 assists and a career-high eight total blocks, seven assists, while having six digs. Amaechi recorded a career-high seven block assists and Brakin tallied six total blocks, a career-high. For the weekend Carter tallied 176 assists, 45 digs and 13 total blocks.
The Tartans return to action September 29-30 when they travel to NYU for the first UAA Round Robin.
