Tartans Open UAA Championship with 3-0 Win

Nov. 2 – (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team defeated the University of Rochester 3-0 in their first match of the University Athletic Association Championship being held at the University of Rochester. A strong opening game propelled the Tartans to the opening win 30-20, 30-24, 30-26.

Sophomore setter Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor) picked up 19 of her 43 assists in the first game as senior Kate Stepp (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had a run of five straight kills and six for the game. The offense hit .413 for the game and started the second much the same way.

Carter started the second game with consecutive service aces on her way to five for the game and six overall. Freshman Caroline Size (Lewes, Del./Saint Thomas Moore Academy) and senior Abbie Toney (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) each had four kills for the game which the Tartans won 30-24. 

Defense was also key for the Cardinal and Gray as freshman libero Cameron Griffin (Lake Forest, Ill.) totaled 25 digs for the match while junior Liz DeVleming (Mercer Island, Wash.) was in double digits with 10. Sophomore Jess Brackin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and junior Chisom Amaechi (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) each totaled three blocks while both had eight kills apiece.

The Tartans next face Case Western Reserve University in their second match before playing top seed Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday morning.
