Volleyball Places Fourth at UAA Championships

Nov. 4 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon’s volleyball team hosted the two day 2006 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships Friday and Saturday, November 3-4. The Tartans came away with a fourth place showing dropping a 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-22) decision to the 19th-ranked Violets of New York University in the third place match Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, the Tartans went 2-1 in pool play becoming the second seed out of pool A for bracket play on Saturday. Carnegie Mellon started the championships Friday with back-to-back victories over Case Western Reserve University, 3-1 (29-31, 30-13, 30-27, 30-11), and the University of Rochester, 3-0 (30-20, 30-25, 30-18). The Tartans then fell to the second-ranked Bears of Washington (Mo.) University 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-16) to end pool play.

Saturday, the cardinal and gray squared off against Emory University, ranked 13th nationally, in the semifinal match and fell 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-16).

In the Tartans match against NYU senior right side Catie Fisher (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) was the only Tartan with double digit kills as she posted 12, while junior Abbie Toney (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) had nine kills.

Defensively the Tartans were led by senior libero Kat Fox (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) and senior outside hitter Amanda Bradford (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) with 19 and 14 digs, respectively. Setters, senior Brea Carlock (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and freshman Samantha Carter (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor) each recorded 16 assists. Bradford led the charge with three blocks.

The Tartans finish the regular season with a 20-15 record.
