Tartans Split in UAA Play

Oct. 14 - (ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon volleyball team traveled to Washington (Mo.) University for second round action of University Athletic Association (UAA) play Friday, October 14. The Tartans defeated Brandeis (Mass.) University in their first match before falling in a highly competitive match to #3 Emory (Ga.) University.

Against Brandeis, the Tartans lost the first game 27-30 before coming back with an intensive attack to sweep the next three games 30-27, 30-12, and 30-14. Junior RS Catie Fisher (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the team with 23 kills, while senior MH Chrissy Bartek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) totaled 15 kills and junior OH Amanda Bradford (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) had eight kills. Junior setter Brea Carlock (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) registerd 37 assists in the win. Bartek also collected three service aces.

Defensively, junior libero Kat Fox (Oklahoma City, Okla./Cassady) and junior Alex Gutschick (Severna Park, Md.) each totaled 13 digs, while Bradford had 10. Junior MH Melena Yablinsky (Patton, Pa./Cambria Heights) tallied five block assists, as Fisher and junior MH Becky Metler (McLean, Va./Kent Place) each had two block assists.

In the second match of the day, the Tartans battled the third ranked team in the nation in three tough games before falling 26-30, 27-30, and 28-30.

Fisher again led the attack with nine kills, while Bartek and Bradford each had eight kills. Carlock assisted on 29 points, as Fox had three service aces. Defensively, Bradford led the team with 12 digs, as Fox had eight.

At the net, Bartek totaled four block solos, while Yablinsky also totaled four blocks, three of them solos. Metler again had two block assists for the Tartans.

Carnegie Mellon continues UAA play on Saturday with matches against Case Western Reserve and University of Rochester.
